Silent disco equipment: the full kit list and what it costs
Every component a silent disco actually requires, what each part costs to rent or to own, where the hidden costs hide — and the version of a silent disco that needs none of it.
Silent disco equipment is the hardware needed to send music to guests individually instead of through loudspeakers: wireless headphones with built-in radio receivers, one transmitter per channel, an audio source, and the charging and transport gear that keeps the headsets running. Cost scales per guest, because every additional person needs another physical receiver.

A hardware silent disco is six things, and the last two are the ones people forget when they budget.

Two ways to get it, and the arithmetic works very differently.
Renting
- Headsets: roughly $8–15 each per event, usually with a minimum order
- Transmitters: often bundled into the package, otherwise $50–150 each — one per channel
- Delivery, collection & deposit: commonly $100–300
- On-site staff: extra, if you want someone else running the distribution desk
- Lost or damaged units: billed at replacement cost, and there are always some

A 200-guest kit is usually a $15,000–40,000 purchase. It generally pays back somewhere around eight to twelve events at the same headcount — a real break-even, but one that quietly assumes nothing is lost, nothing breaks, and your guest list never grows past the number of units you bought.

The limits nobody quotes you
Cost is the visible constraint. These three are the ones that decide what kind of event you can actually run.
- Range. UHF transmitters reach roughly 30–100 m outdoors with line of sight, and much less through walls, floors, and a dense crowd. Range is the ceiling on how physically large a hardware silent disco can be — a second room or a garden past the tree line is often simply out.
- Channels. Headsets are built around three channels, occasionally four. Each one needs its own transmitter and its own slice of licence-exempt spectrum, and they interfere with each other as you add more. Three is not a design choice; it is close to the practical limit.
- Headcount. Every guest is another physical unit to buy or rent, charge, hand out, sanitise, and count back in. The cost is attached to bodies rather than to the event, so doubling the guest list doubles the bill.
The equipment list for a silent disco with no equipment
The three limits above are all consequences of one decision: broadcasting over radio to hardware receivers. Stream the same channels over the internet to the phones guests already carry, and the equipment list collapses to what is already in the room.
A smartphone silent disco needs: a phone per guest, and usable mobile data or Wi-Fi. No headsets, no transmitters, no chargers, no cases, no distribution desk, and nothing to count back in.
That removes the hardware, but the more useful part is what it removes from the event design:
- Nobody shares a headset. Guests use their own earbuds, so there is no sanitising between wearers, no fit problem, and no queue at a distribution desk while your event is meant to be starting.
- No transmitter, so no range. Coverage follows the network instead of radio line-of-sight. The overflow room, the garden, the floor above, and the smoking area are all in range — and so is another city.
- No channel ceiling. Radio caps you at three or four channels because each one needs a transmitter. Streamed stages have no transmitter, so there is no fixed cap on how many run at once — one MC can host across all of them while each stage keeps its own music.
- Music, delivery, and ticketing in one place. A hardware silent disco is a rental contract, a separate DJ rig, and a separate ticketing platform. Streaming the event means the audio source, the distribution, and paid entry are the same system — one link for guests, one dashboard for you.
- The same setup at any size. Because nothing scales per head, a flat in an apartment building and a multi-stage festival run the identical setup. You are not re-quoting the event every time the guest list moves.
Equipment checklist by event size
Under 50 guests
Renting is easy and cheap at this size. One transmitter, one channel, and someone on the door is a workable operation. Streaming wins mainly on not having a distribution desk at all.
50–200 guests
Where the distribution desk becomes a real queue and deposits become real admin. Two or three channels, 2–3 transmitters, at least one charging case, and staff. Budget $1,500–3,500 to rent.
200–1,000 guests
Hardware logistics dominate the event plan: minimum orders, multiple charging cycles, staffed hand-out and hand-back, and a reconciliation count at 2am. Range starts constraining your floor plan.
1,000+ or multi-space
Where hardware stops being a budget question and becomes a feasibility one — transmitter range will not cover the footprint, and per-head cost is now the largest line in the event. Streaming is the practical route.
